Pakistan is facing power shortage. The aim of this project is to generate power on a small scale. As gym exercise machines are used daily and people use these machines to lose weight or to improve cardio health. The human energy exerted during exercises can be utilized to generate power, which can be stored in battery. Exercise machine such as gym bicycle can be coupled with a DC Generator. The generated energy in a controlled manner can be stored in a battery or battery bank(s) with the help of power electronic converters. The stored energy of the battery bank can be utilized in many ways i.e. to run appliances of the gym. The produced energy will be environmental friendly as no fossil fuel is used. The proposed system is sustainable in nature because people will keep using gym machines to maintain a healthy life style, like forever.

Project Implementation Method

In the installation of this system, the exercise machine is connected to a dc generator. The working of the exercise machines will cause the rotating shaft of the generator to move, thus producing power. This generated power cannot be utilized directly from generator as generated power will vary according to the motions of the person exerting energy on exercise machine. To convert this variable power to constant power, a buck boost power electronic converter will be used. The constant voltage from the buck boost converter will be used to charge the battery with the help of a power electronic trickle charger. The trickle charger will automatically stop battery charging when the battery is fully charged, by continuously reducing the charging amperes to ensure long life of the battery.

  • Production of free and clean electricity as a byproduct of energy exerted on exercise machines by humans.
  • Produced energy can be stored and utilized later on.
  • The proposed  project will aid to reduce stress on national grids by providing power on small scale to the consumers.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

This project uses energy exerted during exercise. The exercise machine is connected to a generator with a belt. The generator produces power.  The produced power will have variation due to variation in motion of the person using the exercise machine.  The buck booster converter provides a constant flow of power to charge the battery with the help of another power electronics based trickle charger. The charging is done in a controlled manner to ensure the health of the battery.
