Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryTwin Screw Extruder is a machine widely used in polymer and pharmaceutical industry. We want to design and fabricate an extruder capable of melt mixing polymer matrix with the reinforced particles and extruding the composite mixture through changable die. The material extruded will then be tested to find out the mechanical properties of the extruded composite.
Project ObjectivesFollowing are the Objectives of the project
- Designing the combination of melt blending and twin screw extruder machine
- To achieve the efficient mixing of the materials for the composite using polymer pulverizing machine
- To get the output of composite/polymer in multiple shapes using die assembly
- To design multiple moulds for Composite Mechanical Testing
The Project Implementation Method will be as Follows.
- First we will be doing Literature Review to find out how mush work has been done on this machine and where can we innovate in the design.
- A 3D model will be made using a computer software and simulation will be done.
- After the 3D model, we will start buying the necessary equipments and start fabricating the machine.
Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) have a variety of applications in many different field including aerospace and electronics. They are light in weight and are quickly replacing metals in different sectors. The benefit of this project is that, a machine will be made which is not only making PMCs but also giving the and composite desired shapes such as pipes plates etc.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final machine will have a geared motor rotating two screws of 1in diameter each, the screws will have 4 zones namely feeding zone, melting zone, mixing zone and finally pumping zone. At the end of screws, there will be a die capable of extruding the material in pipe shape. A heater will be installed on the casing for the melting of the polymer
