Project Title

Design and fabrication of hydrofoil bike

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

Pakistan is ranked 47th in the world for entertainment and tourism, and 107th for global innovation. These industries are maturing, albeit at a slow pace. Pakistan has the world's third-best beach tourism potential. This potential can simply be increased by the addition of specific tourism-attracting equipment. Though certain equipment, such as river boating, jet skiing, and so on, is available. These machines, however, require fuel and emit NOx, SOx, COx, and other hazardous pollutants.

We are designing and fabricating a low-cost Hydrofoil Bike that meets sustainable development goals and runs on zero fuel. The Hydrofoil Bike is a new addition to the entertainment industry.

A hydrofoil, also known as a foil, is a water-based lifting surface. In appearance and function, they are similar to aero foils used by planes. In our hydrofoil bike, we use a converging hydrofoil with tubercles. Tubercles are wavy structures that form on the leading edge of a hydrofoil. The Humpback whale inspired this concept.

The non-smooth leading edges of the humpback whale outperform the smooth leading edges of our wings, turbines, and other types of blades in terms of fluid dynamics. The humpback whale outperforms other species due to its unusual flippers, which have large, irregular-looking bumps called tubercles across their leading edges. Sheets of water flowing over smooth flippers break up into turbulent vortices as they cross the flipper, whereas sheets of water flowing between humpback tubercles maintain even channels of fast-moving water, allowing humpbacks to keep their "grip" on the water at sharper angles and turn tighter corners even at low speeds.

The spear gear mechanism will be used in our hydrofoil bike. This spear gear mechanism allows us to transfer full power to the propeller, which is attached just above the rear hydrofoil. Riders will be able to glide across the surface thanks to this propeller. Furthermore, if the bike falls off during the first few rides, it can be relaunched from deep water.

We are using a 400Watt motor, which not only provides all of the propulsion a rider may require, but also ensures silence for use in all environments. The hydrofoil, made of carbon fiber, reduces drag while remaining strong and lightweight. It also has a modular design that allows for quick assembly and transportation.

Project Objectives

Our vision is to develop a low-cost Hydrofoil Bike that can be used in the entertainment and sports industries, similar to a jet ski.

•To select a specific front and rear foil for hydrofoil bike.

•To design tubercle Hydrofoil model with conversing cross section on Solidworks 2018.

•Hydrofoil Bike model on Solidworks 2018.

•To perform simulation on Ansys 19.1.

•To fabricate Hydrofoil Bike.

Project Implementation Method

Our goal is to complete this project in seven distinct phases.

•Selection of Hydrofoil

•Design CAD model

•CFD Analysis with Tubercles

•CFD Results

•Selection of material

•Fabrication

•Real time testing

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Hydrofoil bike is the latest technological advancement in the entertainment industry.

In place of wheels, the Hydrofoil bike will have a front and a rear hydrofoil. When the bike is submerged in the ocean or a river, the foils generate lift.
In a hydrofoil bike, the energy generated by the paddles charges the battery, which then powers the propeller via an electric motor.
The final deliverables are a hydrofoil bike with these components.
