Project Objectives

To reduce the usage of traditional stoves which require wood.

Electricity will not be required for any purpose as heating is done directly through sun.

Understand the effects of rapid population growth on natural resources.

Understand how such cookers can help with the management and conservation of resources.

The second objective is to integrate thermal energy storage into the design to store energy and use for later use.

Project Implementation Method

Basic method is operating a cooker by directly using solar energy from the sun using a parabolic dish.

A parabolic dish does have reflectors like mirrors and has an absorber at its focal point. That is a concentrating solar collector that works by reflecting and focusing the solar energy. It uses the mirror-like reflectors or lenses.Sunlight is concentrated on a single point. The solar dish in a paraboloid shape collects incoming solar energy from the sun.The collected solar energy is then focused to a small focal point area that is positioned in front of the dish.The small mirror-like reflectors are used to concentrate the thermal energy to the heat absorber in the focal point area.

Benefits of the Project

Unlike an LPG based cooking solution where you need to spend money every time you get a new cylinder, a solar cooker requires no such recurring payments.

A solar cooker produces no emission of gasses like carbon monoxide, maintaining a better air quality indoors.

As solar cookers use sunlight to cook food, you do not have to worry about power cuts. 

The can achieve the highest temperatures as compared to other types of cookers like box type, panel type etc.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are constructing a 2.5 diameter dish with an adjustable stand that can allow us to adjust the angle of dish multiple times. A slight innovation is that during day time when solar energy is used to cook food directly, it can also be stored into the battery by means of solar panels that are placed along with the dish. The battery powers an electric stove. This will helps us to cook food even when there is no sunlight.
