Project Summary

Automated bottle filling machine is designed and fabricated for filling and capping process of various coloured bottles. To ensure exact and same amount of fluid automated system is preferred over the manual in order to reduce cost, in accuracies in volume of liquids. This mechanism will accelerates the filling process and there by reducing complexities in system design.

Project Objectives

•To perform a filling water process into different types of bottles.

•To perform a capping process on the bottles.

•Implementation of IR & color sensors to detect position & color of bottles respectively.

•To build a prototype which is light, low cost, user friendly and with transparent structure.

Project Implementation Method

  • When bottle comes on straight conveyor 1, it will move the bottle towards round conveyor.
  • The IR sensor at the start of round conveyor will detect the presence of bottle and move at 45 degrees, where color of bottle will be checked by color sensor and liquid will be filled accordingly.
  • After filling, round conveyor will move at 45 degrees and cape will be placed, then again round conveyor will move at 45 degrees, where cap tightening will be done.
  • After that, round conveyor will move the bottle towards straight conveyor 2 and process is completed.

Below are some of the common benefits that come with adding an automatic filling machine:

Automatic bottle fillers can produce a greater number of filled product in a shorter amount of time than  manual filling or a semi-automatic. 

2. Consistency and Reliability

In addition to speed, automatic liquid fillers offer both consistency and reliability .The automatic machines are accurate based on the filling principle being put to use. The removal of uncertainty and inconsistency is also a large benefit for packagers who need to hit specific production goals.

3. Versatility

Automatic filling machines are manufactured to handle multiple container types and sizes, and can even run more than one product in many cases. Very few companies package one product in one container, but rather have a variety of products and/or containers that must be prepared for the end user. The versatility of automatic liquid fillers allows a packager to set up one machine to run many or all of the product and container combinations in use.

4. Easy Operation

Almost every automatic bottle filler will be centrally controlled by an easy to use .Automatic liquid fillers can often be primarily set up on the production floor by the touch of a button, about as easy as the operation of a filling machine can get.

5. Ability to Upgrade

It has ability and capacity to be upgraded to industrial level projects.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The built automatic bottle filling machine performs well and has been able to fill different types of bottles depending upon their color. The built machine has been finished and is ready to start filling a bottle. The machine is easy to operate.

Electronic Components Used

Microcontroller used

STM32f103C8 (Arm Cortex) is used to interface with electronic devices

Geared motors

•Three geared motors are used

•Two 400 rpm geared motors are used for straight Conveyors

•One 400 rpm geared motor is used for cap tightening            

•12 volt DC is voltage ratings for all geared motors

Stepper motor

  • 1 stepper is used for round conveyor 
  • 1.8 degree is the step angle
  • 24 volts is the voltage rating of this stepper motor

Water pumps

•Three water pumps are used, one for each tank

•12 volt DC

•10 L/min

Servo motors

•Three servo motors are used

•One for pipe positioning

•One for pulling cap tighter up & down

•One for push mechanism

•The operating voltage for these motors ranges between 4.8 to 6V with a maximum rotation of roughly 180 degrees.

IR Sensors

•Two IR sensors are used

•One for detecting bottle

•One for detecting & adjusting round conveyor position

•Detection distance: 2 ~ 30cm

•Working voltage: 3 - 5V DC

Color sensor

•Used to detect color of bottles

•TCS3200/TCS230

•2.7V to 5V power

•Digital TTL interface

•Communicates directly to Microcontroller

Design dimensions

•Straight conveyors length = 25 inches

•Straight conveyor width = 2.7 inches

•Round conveyor diameter = 20 inches

•Round conveyor teeth's diameter = 2.6 inches

•Total length = 70 inches

•Three tanks with the capacity of 3 liters each

•Angle between the two cavities of round conveyor is 45 degrees

Bottle diameter is 2.5 inches ( 0.5 liter )

Bottle Height is 8 inches (0.5 liter)
