The project is to design and develop a UAV which is capable of Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL), along with this UAV would also be able to acquire images and process them with the help of machine learning algorithms. The project is divided into 3 parts:

  1. mechanical design
  2. control system
  3. computations 

The mechanical portion would include 3D modelling, cutting and printing. The Control system would include assembly and proper functioning of the flight controller and its peripherals. Computations would include image acquisition and its processing.

Objectives:

  1. To design a model of aerodynamically stable Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
  2. To design hardware using 3D cutting and printing.
  3. To assemble propellers, sensors, and circuit boards.
  4. To remotely control the aircraft using a remote control.
  5. Apply image processing and machine learning algorithms for data analysis.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the project:

  1. The VTOL UAV is the fastest among other aircraft to carry emergency medical equipment for mountainous terrains because an aeroplane cannot land in mountainous areas and a drone have relatively slower speed than VTOL UAV.
  2. For naval operations, smaller ships can be used for VTOL UAVs rather than using huge aircraft carriers.
  3. This UAV could replace airports expanded on a vast area to a relatively small piece of land because it just needs an area of its size for landing NO long runways.
  4. This UAV is much more beneficial to trace criminals due to its relatively fast speed as compared to formal drones.
  5. This UAV would also enable us to determine traffic density much more efficiently than formal drones.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Technical Details of Final Deliverable:

  1. The final deliverable of our project would be an aircraft, it’s mechanical design would be modelled by using CAD software. For hardware manufacturing 3D cutting and printing would be used.
  2. This UAV would have a vertical takeoff and then it changes its orientation from vertical motion to horizontal motion. The transition from vertical motion to horizontal motion is dependent on the orientation of propellers and wings. To control this UAV a flight controller will be used which would take inputs from a remote control and sensors. Propellors and motors (to control wings) will be connected to the output of this controller for a smooth and stable flight.
  3. This UAV would be able to carry a payload of 500g approximately.
  4.  For different operations of this UAV an image acquisition system would be deployed and with the help of machine learning algorithms we would be able to extract a required feature (for example a tourist in an emergency in mountainous areas) and to count objects (for example traffic density).
