Design and Development of Power Generation System using Pelton Wheel Concepts for Rural Area having Natural Waterfalls and Streams
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryWater is the renewable source of energy and approximately 15% of world energy drives by Hydro power plant. In Pakistan, there are various natural resources such as water, air, wind and solar. Among of them, water resource is the most abundant as there are many rivers and streams with rich electrical energy. Moreover, the cost of hydro-electric power is relatively cheaper compared with other resources. This paper intends to design the runner and nozzle with needle for Pelton turbine that will generate 5 kW output power from a water head of 15 m and volumetric flow rate of 0.044 m3/s. For these head and capacity of turbine, rotational speed is 1000 rpm, pitch circle diameter is 0.15 m and jet diameter is 0.058 m. The number of buckets based on jet ratio 3 are 17.
Moreover, we are also looking forward to design a module that would take fuel (water) and recirculate it. This module would also be helpful in urban households power generation.
Project ObjectivesElectricity is one of the greatest crisis in our country. To overcome this catastrophe, we must direct our attentions towards natural, renewable and a cleaner souce of electricity. The main objective of our Final Year Project is to generate electricity for atleast one household from natural streams of waterfall. The objective currently is to design for a smaller scale. We can scale it up for various objectives.
We are also motivated to design our module suitable for urban areas and areas where water head is not always available.
Project Implementation MethodFirstly, we will study related literatures and researches for broader understanding of our project. We will shorlist related literatures and projects.
Secondly, we will be finding out the different components of our project available in our country (i.e. Generators, turbines etc).
Thirdly, calculations will be carried out according to our design requirements. We will be calculating our design values on MS Excel to avail design values when requirement changes.
Fourthly, the model will be designed on CREO Software according to the values obtained. We will also be analyzing our model on ANSYS for various parameters.
Next, we will be fabricating our model. This model will be on a smaller scale for testing purposes. We can then scale up the model for bigger desired requirements.
Lastly, we will present our model, project, analysis and our sheer dedicated hard work to out supervisors, professors, peers and batchmates. Our goal is to showcase our model on a greater level rather than limiting it to our degree course.
Benefits of the ProjectSeveral inherent advantages have been mentioned for hydro-power generation including,
- Simplicity of its technology, which is available and only requires adaptation to specific conditions in order to reduce costs.
- Viability as a means of providing electricity, particularly in rural and isolated areas, without any need for imported fuel supply.
- Contribution to the promotion of industrial, socio-economic and cultural development of the rural environment.
- The long lifetime of the structure and machinery, requirements in the locality.
- Adaptability of scale designed for specific user requirements in the locality.
- Compatibility with the use of water for other purposes such as irrigation and drinking water supply, thereby improving investment.
- A supplement to the regional or national grid.
- Mini Pelton Wheel Turbine for power generator for rural or isolated areas with natural streams of water but no electricity source.
- To provide free electricity to rural households.
- Power Generation.
