Design and development of eyeball controlled wheelchair for Quadriplegics
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryThe number of people who are paralyzed, dependent on others due to loss of self-mobility is growing as the population ages. Enabling handicapped people to locomote, intellichairs are designed using HMI( Human Machine Interface).Self dependency for allocated non-walkers providing hand-free control will be enabled. For people with severe disabilities, this project presents design of developing a semi-autonomous wheelchair which can be controlled by the movements of eye.
Project ObjectivesTo design and develop an eyeball controlled wheelchair which would assist Quadriplegics for mobility. Quadriplegics are those people who are affected by paralysis of all four limbs. The wheelchair will be equipped with high quality webcam, mounted infront of an eye, which will perform vision based navigation. The aim is to investigate the viability of the developed shared control framework and the algorithms, with the goal of evaluating the different levels of human-robot cooperation.
Project Implementation MethodLiterature review, hardware development, Control system, Biomedical Instrumentation and Viusal based communication, Image Processing, Algorithm Design, Experimentation, compilation.
Benefits of the ProjectIn this project, eye-gaze tracking technology is to be used to address the problem for those with severe muscular disability and speech impairment.
It will be an easy-to-use, economical, customizable, convenient and non-invasive method that will have the potential to solve the problem faced by many unfortunate individuals in the world today.
This idea is a push to bring back such individuals from estrangement to comprehensiveness in standard society for philanthropic concerns by providing self-dependency.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe technology involved in the project is;
- Web camera is to be used to detect the eye movements which will be further processed to drive the motors.
- The webcam will be mounted on a cap, continuously staring at the user’s eyes.
- Serial communication will be used as a means of communication between the web camera and the microcontroller.
- The microcontroller will be placed on the wheel chair which will be connected to the motors, driving the wheel chair in the direction the person sitting on the chair desires to move in.
