Project Summary

In this project, a wideband (3 to 4GHz) antenna array is designed for 5th generation (5G) smart phone applications.  The antenna array configuration is consists of low cost FR4 substrate with 1.6mm thickness and 75x150mm2 dimensions using double diamond slot in the ground plane. On the upper surface, an umbrella shape microstrip structure is used on all corners with equal space. First a single element radiator is designed in CST studio in the mentioned band with S11 <-10dB and isolation less than -13dB. The same single unit used for 5G mobile phone antenna array application with better TOTAL ACTIVE REFLECTION COFFICIENT (TARC) and ENVELOPE CORRELATION COFFICIENTS (ECC). Similarly, High isolation, high e?ciency (>85%) and su?cient gain-level characteristics have been obtained for the proposed smartphone antenna array. It is compared with existing mobile phone array. The achieved bandwidth in the existing work is around 600MHz. But the proposed array has better bandwidth 1GHz which can be used perfectly as a broadband mobile phone antenna array for 5G massive multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) systems.

Project Implementation Method

The project is implemented in three phases

Phase-1 Literature Review

In this phase the existing work on 5G Mobile Phone Antenna Array is studied.

Phase-2 Software implementation

Based on exiting work, a novel structure is implemented in CST studio for broadband (3-4GHz) with better isolation, efficiency and gain. In this phase fisrt a single element is implemented for better results, then an array is designed for 5G Mobile phone applications using the single element.

Phase-3 Hardware implementation

The optimized antenna array is fabricated using FR4 substrate. The results were verified using Network Analyzer.

  3. Better isolation to reduce the mutual coupling between elements.

  5. It can be extended to sub 6G applications
