Project Title

Design and derivation of novel riveting process for aircrafts and automated machines

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

The project aims to improve the mechanical performance (tensile strength, fatigue strength, energy absorption) of hard to access aircraft and automotive joints through the development of a novel riveting process. The proposed process will be adapted from the concept of friction stir riveting. The riveting process entails the penetration of a rotating solid rivet with a specific RPM and feed rate, into the requisite joint worksheets. The frictional heat generated by the rotation of the rivet will be used for the formation of the chemical joint and the rivet will be used for the formation of the mechanical joint.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are as follows:

Project Implementation Method

The proposed project will be completed in three stages. In the first stage, process development and optimization will be carried out by adopting a hierarchal approach. In this stage, prototypes/ working model of the joints will be manufactured on Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machines through a customized Design of Experiments (DOE) where key process parameters will be included to understand their influence on the joint quality. In the second stage, the manufactured joints will be subjected to different mechanical tests (tensile, fatigue) and further compared with the joints manufactured through the conventional riveting processes. In the last stage, the joint configuration (process parameters, rivet design) will be optimized based on the results obtained in the second stage.

Benefits of the Project

The proposed process will help in improving the existing joint quality in terms of providing additional bonding (metallurgical) and removing the requirement of the two-side access which is essential in conventional riveting processes.
