Design And Control Of Active Lower Limb Orthosis For Gait Rehabilitation In Humans
Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject SummaryThe project focuses on the devlopement of active lower limb orthosis that will help people with drop foot/slap foot disorders to walk in a normal way. The designed device will integrate with an existing passive orthotic device and will modulate the functionality of the lower anke joint for gait cycle rehabilitation.
Project Objectives- Analysis of human gait cycle using Inertial Measurement Units
- Modelling of a Series Elastic Actuator (SEA)
- Design and Fabrication of an SEA
- Integration with an Existing Passive Orthosos
- Control of the SEA based on a Gait Cycle
The complete project will be realized in the following stages
1. Analysis of human gait cycle using IMUs.
2. Design and analysis of an SEA based system.
3. Control of the system based on Human gait cycle.
4. Integration with an existing passive orthosis.
5. Testing
Benefits of the Projectthe project will effectivly help people having problems given below
- The inability of the human muscular/nervous system to control the ankle movement result into drop foot problem in people.
- Drop foot left untreated may result into equinus.
- Equinus may result to strike of toe first then the heel on the ground resulting in tripping and fatal injury of the patient.
- Uncontrolled planter flexion.
- Production of sound when feet strikes the ground results in a clap sound generation resulting to slap foot problem.
- Gait cycle if not restored may result into paralysis.
A werable system that will integrate with an exisitng passive orthosis (widely manufacured in Pakistan) and will restore the gait cycle of an effected person.
