Project Summary

Today we are living in the 21st century. The adaptation of latest technology is inevitable. We need to use latest technologies that can generate economic prosperity & social well-being. Smart home is a term that refers to the modern homes that have appliances, lighting, and electronic devices that can be controlled remotely by the owner of the home. Smart home-enabled devices can also operate in conjunction with other devices in the home and communicate information to other smart devices. In our prototype, we are going to analyze and develop the model of Smart home to be implemented in the Smart City. Raspberry Pi is the central hub in our prototype. Hardware model of smart home is being designed to realize the Smart home for the Smart city. The roof of the home is integrated with photovoltaic cells, so that it can provide solar power during the daytime.

For the home automation, we are currently working on an android application that can control the home appliances remotely, Raspberry Pi uses relay module to control the home appliances, also enable us to monitor home appliances through web (either to use PC or Laptop or smart phone), furthermore Alexa voice technology is also being implemented to remotely control home appliances. In our prototype we shall install Alexa voice in Raspberry Pi instead of using Amazon echo dot. BMP180, DHT11 and rain sensor are to be interfaced with Raspberry Pi to monitor the weather in our prototype.

For hybrid power management system, a controller is to be designed to handle power system collected from various means including Photovoltaic cells, wind power (using dc motor and propeller that demonstrate wind turbines), and power from transmission line (we shall provide this power from 220V using step down transformer and power regulator circuitry to provide power smoothly) is controlled and provide power to the home without any shortfall. The implementation of smart home shall provide a road map to built smart cities that can produces a sustainable economic development and creates an optimal place for people to live by increasing the quality of life.

Project Objectives

Following are the objectives of our propose system.

  • To design and model Smart Home prototype.
  • Home automation and control for self-sustained houses.
  • Hybrid Power system installation
  • Weather Monitoring system

Project Implementation Method

Our system consists of the physical modelling of a home, home automation using android application and using the Alexa voice technology, hybrid power installation, and weather monitoring system. The above all areas of the prototype are implemented using Raspberry Pi.

  • Physical model of home is developed to demonstrate the real home implementation. The roof of the home is developed with photovoltaic cells to provide green (solar) energy in the daytime.
  • Relay module is interfaced with central controller (in our case it is Raspberry Pi), android application is used to automate the home appliances through the relay module which we have interfaced.
  • Apart from android application, Alexa voice technology is also installed in the Raspberry Pi which is also used to turn the appliances ON/OFF through relay module, as per the commands of the user.
  • Hybrid power system is installed in the prototype which consists of power from transmission line (we will use step down transformer in 220V supply to make power supply for the prototype) to run our system, wind power is also realized (by using dc motor with propellers) to get wind power (green energy) for the system. In the last, solar cells which are integrated in the roof of the system provide us green energy. A controller is designed using Arduino to handle the power from various sources. Controller monitors the available power system, send only required power to the home and store remaining power in the battery for future use. As a result, there shouldn’t be any major power shortfall in the smart home, hence it is self-sustained.

Benefits of the Project

The world is moving towards sustainable development and sustainable energy. Smart cities are being planned to generate economic prosperity and improve the quality of life. Smart homes are the subset of smart cities. Smart homes develop the curiosity to built smart cities. Smart homes improve the quality of life and reduces land wastage. Some other benefits of smart homes are:

  • No long power shortfall
  • Flexible home automation
  • Better opportunities for disable and aged persons
  • Reduced congestion

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Raspberry Pi 3

We have used Raspberry Pi as our central controller which monitor and control the whole proposed system. Raspberry Pi is a single board computer  which has following features.

Operating System:

Ubuntu; FreeBSD; Linux; NetBSD; OpenBSD; Plan 9; RISC OS; Windows 10 ARM64; Windows 10 IoT Core.

Power: 5V 3A (for full power delivery to USB devices)

CPU: 1.5 GHz 64/32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A72

Memory: 1, 2, or 4 GB LPDDR4-3200 RAM

Arduino Mega 2560

Arduino Mega 2560 is used to design the controller for hybrid power management. The Arduino Mega is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560. It has 54 digital input/output pins (of which 14 can be used as PWM outputs), 16 analog inputs, 4 UARTs (hardware serial ports), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button.

 

Home Modelling

Model of the home is to be designed for so as to realize smart home physically.

Alexa Voice Technology

Amazon Alexa, known simply as Alexa, is a virtual assistant AI technology developed by ... Amazon allows device manufacturers to integrate Alexa voice capabilities into their own connected products by using the Alexa Voice Service (AVS). Alexa voice technology can be installed in the Raspberry Pi.
