Design Analysis and Fabrication of Solar Powered Stirling Engine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryRecent surge in global warming need to develop more sustainable energy solutions to cater modern energy demands. This need is greatly felt in developing nations like Pakistan but limited emphasis is put on these due to several economic restraints. The only readily available power source is solar energy with about 250-300 sunny days annually.
One advancement to conventional solar photovoltaic solutions is Solar Powered Stirling enginewhich makes use of concentrated solar array through specific arrangement of mirrors to heat fixed mass of air causing it to expand, hence air pressure inside cylinder rises leading to displacement of piston. Project model consists of mirrors aimed at the sun to reflect the rays into the focal point, which is located at the center of the dish. Solar energy is then collected in the form of heat to fuel a Stirling cycle engine, which operates by heat transfer from hot source (Air) to a cold sink in order to displace the piston of stirling engine.
The project aims at designing and fabricating of solar powered Stirling engine covering key areas of Mechanical Engineering such as thermal analysis, computational fluid dynamic analysis and mechanical design with depiction of advanced manufacturing processes. Moreover, it has a great environmental significance due to zero carbon emission nature.
