Project Summary

Project title ’Design of Absorption Chiller from Jacket Water of Gas Generator' is a project in which we need to design Absorption Chiller which will use waste heat of Jacket water of Gas generator of Combine Cycle Combine Power Plant. Internal Combustion Engines releases a significant amount of thermal energy through their jacket water and exhaust systems. The main objective of this project is to utilize the heat that is released by the gas engine to the jacket water system into a vapor absorption chiller to meet the space cooling load requirement.

Project Objectives

The objective of project entitled “Designing of Vapour Absorption Chiller for Waste Heat Recovery from Engine Jacket Water” is to recover the heat that is dissipated from Jenbacher engine jacket water and reutilize it in order to accommodate the space cooling requirement at K-Electric using Vapour Absorption Chiller. The scope of this project includes:

• The designing of Vapour Absorption Chiller in which all the parameters related to absorption chiller are to be determined

• Modelling and Simulation in which the model of absorption chiller is to be made on solid works and the simulation of chiller’s generator is to be done on ANSYS in order to validate the theoretical results

• Designing of Piping system in which the piping losses and other piping related calculations will be done and piping layout will be designed using Caesar

• Pumps Calculation includes the determination of required parameters for pump selection

• Insulation for hot water, chilled water, cooling water piping is to be determined

• Bill of Quantity

Project Implementation Method

The project has been divided into three phases.
1) Design Calculation Of VAS chiller
Calculating all the design parameters of absorption chiller using AHRI standards and data provided.


2) Modeling and Simulation
The 3D model of absorption chiller will be made using solidworks and simulation of chiller’s generator (most critical component) will be done using Ansys Fluent to validate our theoretical results


3) Piping Design
 Piping design and its calculation will be done after plant visit .This will be done on Caesar II software


4) Pump Design
Pump calculations will be done using the head pressure and required volume flowrate


5) Insulation Selection
The insulations will be suggested according to hot water and cold water piping


6) Bill Of Quantity
In order to itemize the required material


7) Research Paper Writing
After all calculations and designing we will write a research paper

The waste heat of gas generators will be recovered making the overall plant more efficient

The study from this project can lead to more advancement in absorption chiller technology

The cooling load requirement will be fulfilled after successful completion of this project
