Project Summary

The purpose of our final year project is to design and manufacture a working model of a flexible roller conveyor. We intend to perform calculations to design the system and perform analysis on it to further deduce the type of material we should use for our roller conveyor. Our design of the flexible roller conveyor will be based on certain parameters such as the radius of gyration.

Project Objectives

The project we have chosen is widely used in different industries. The basic goal of a flexible roller conveyor is to fit where fixed conveyors can’t be used due to lack of space, it can fit in compact spaces and can be stored easily. It a replacement for manual labor, as it can transport objects more safely and faster than manual labor. This would decrease the number of damaged products due to manual labor. The conveyor is motor powered which allows the transportation of objects even at a height.

Project Implementation Method

As mentioned above we will design our system based on mainly three different parameters; Simulation and calculations, maximum turn radius, and motor synchronization.

The calculations will be to determine the dimensions and material selection to lift the required load which is 200 lb/ft. The material of the rollers will also determine the amount of friction between them and the objects. The weight and the size/inertia of the transporting material will determine the maximum turn radius of the flexible roller conveyor. To synchronize the motors, we will use a speed controller using a PID controller synchronization.

Researching different types of papers that had some similarities to our project of flexible roller conveyor helped us as it showed us a reference point and the important points and possible difficulties we might encounter while designing and manufacturing our project.
