                       With the increase in human population in cities and therefore number of vehicles, traffic control signals have been playing significant role in managing traffic flow in cities. It provides safety and convenience to both drivers and pedestrians. However, traditional traffic control signals fails in time management, as it allocates equal time slots to each road when others roads free. This creates unnecessary waiting for drivers, which could not be endurable in every case, as being in time, is important to everyone. Therefore, here we proposed density based traffic control signal, which allocates different time slots to each road according to vehicle density on it and therefore doing time management function. This system also comes with IR signal override control in case of emergency vehicles such as fire brigade, ambulance, etc. So this is also a priority based system. This system, therefore, offers advantages over ordinary traffic control signal.

Project Objectives Objectives

                          Our project aims at reducing traffic congestion and unwanted long time and giving priority to ambulance and fire truck delay during the traffic light switch overs especially when the traffic is very low. It is designed to be implemented in places nearing the junctions where the traffic signals are placed, in order to reduce the congestion in these junctions. It keeps a track of the vehicles in each road and accordingly adjusts the time for each traffic light signal. The higher the number of vehicles and ambulance or fire truck on the road the longer will be the time delay allotted for that corresponding traffic light signal

The IR sensor monitors the traffic density at the four lanes of the intersection

We have categorized the traffic into five categories as 

Traffic Density                          Time Delay

Low Density                              10sec (normal operations)

Medium Density                        15 sec

High Density                              20 sec

The microcontroller identifies the category of traffic density and assigns the corresponding time delay.

Arduino Duemilanove comes with any 1 to 2 microcontroller chips, or Atmega168 Atmega328. Of these 2, the Atmega328 chip is improved, more advanced. Unlike Atmega168 having 16K program memory and 512 bytes of SRAM internal flash, the Atmega328 has 32K program memory and 2K internal flash SRAM. ATmega328 has 28 on the map. It has 14 pin digital / S, 6 of which can be used while PWM and six analog input pins. These I / O 20 pins are on the map.
