Project Summary

Smart grid is the most modernized electrical grid which set up an automated two way communication between end users and utility to deliver power efficiently using best control and communication technology. A laboratory based DC smart grid is established to familiarize the students about its control and monitoring mechanism. LABVIEW is used to interface primary substation with the secondary ones which are communicating with their customers. A demand-side management scheme (DMS) is developed using Arduino to meet increasing load demand and to share surplus power between customers. IEEE communication protocols 802.11 and 802.3 are followed via Ethernet Shield or ESP 8266 module to effectively communicate between secondary substations and the customers.

DISCOs can be benefited by the above idea which in turn would be great benefit to NTDC. In this way the Industrial Power demand can be met easily. 

Project Objectives

  • This helps the students to discriminate between Conventional Grid Technology Vs Smart Grid Technology.
  • It contain SCADA based system which is designed for students to have better understanding of Generation Capacity in real time.
  • It enhance the skill of automation in Net-Metering process for a distribution company.

  •   This Laboratory based Smart Grid Trainer develop the knowledge of a demand-controlling tools, enabling to generate and deliver power efficiently.
  • Bi-directional flow of power at the load end.

Project Implementation Method

  •  A solar PV panel of 50W is used. This panel is directly connected with main substation which distributed the power to secondary substation
  • SCADA is designed for the real time power flow monitoring and controlling at main substation.
  • The IEEE 802.11 standards for monitoring and controlling the communication channel between secondary substation and local home. We use Wi-Fi module ESP8266-12E but Ethernet or Zigbee are also used.
  • For Load management and live monitoring we use bidirectional power flow between Secondary substation and customer.

Benefits of the Project

  • In most of Engineering Universities of Pakistan, the Smart Grid laboratory setup is not established yet. This laboratory setup enhances the skill of engineering students. Because this new technology will be flourished throughout the world. Nowadays, these types of Smart Grids have been replacing by Conventional Grids. Use of this smart grid laboratory setup helps students to grasp new knowledge about this unique technology. When students use this trainer then they would be capable to design new communication architectures and start automating it.

  • Smart Grid concept at DISCOs level would efficiently control and manage the load. It would also promote the customers for sharing the surplus power by providing easy interfacing SCADA to customers which would improve load management at customers end. This will help the DISCOS to optimize power demand.

  • SCADA used in this project will be very beneficial for the National Transmission and Dispatch Companies (NTDC). Because using this Labview based SCADA system the main NTDC substation will monitor live  Power flow in different DISCOs. This real time monitoring and control of Power flow would enable NTDC to focus on Industrial Power Demand. Apart from it, Grid to Grid instant communication can also be done by replacing the old Wave trapper with new IOT based Wireless sensors.

For instance DC Smart Grid design is used to meet the small energy demand .For example, when one home supply 500 W of electricity to this neighbor for seven hours and charge ten rupees per unit. So, the neighbor will pay 0.5x30x10x7=1050 Rupees monthly. But the first payment of this whole DC power system with best power flow strategies is seventy thousands rupees. The other thing is that, if there is an increase in range of Power System i.e. 1000 to 2000 W, then the profit rate and the rate of return is increase exponentially.  

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

There are  three main technical deliveries by this project.

  • Real time monitoring and controlling of Generated Power is the first part of this Smart Grid. The Labview Based SCADA is established to proper visualization of Sources. This provides us reading in each minute of PV panel.
  • Communication infrastructure is properly working. It provides Mail or SMS up to 18 customers based on predefined conditions. ESP8266 module is connected with current and voltage sensors to measure accurate power delivered and received by customer. So through this step communication is established between customer and secondary substation. This module is also used to send data between main substation and secondary substation.
  • Load management scheme is implemented to setup Bidirectional power flow between customer and main Substation. This power flow is established by control unit. It contain Thyristors, Boast converter and microcontroller.
