Project Title

Data Acquisition and monitoring of parameters of Induction Motor via wireless communication

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

The Project includes the live monitoring of the parameters of Induction Motors in order to analyze the health of the motor. The method that is used to determine the health index of the motor is MCSA (Motor Current Signature Analysis).

The motors are monitored wirelessly in order to detect the variableness in motor’s parameters before the occurrence of the motor failure. The parameters are being monitored and displayed on laptop and smart phone. In this project the parameters which we are going to monitored are motor voltage, current, and temperature. In this manner the production will not come to halt and the deviation from the normal operating condition will cater in the little span of time. The respective goal is achieved by the use of microcontroller, Laptop, sensors, CTs and PTs etc. At last the data will send to the local/global web page and the parameters will be monitored.

Project Objectives

Online and Offline analysis of Induction motor is done in this project. Through the investigation of the induction motor, MCSA used to diagnose unbalance motor supply voltage and broken rotor bar. The unsymmetrical supply and broken bar faults have a significant effect on the induction motor working operation. There are many methods to overcome the damage consequences of unbalance, but the easiest method is to install overload production and it may be protected by control circuits. MCSA is a simple and an accurate method because it needs only one stator current.

This project consists of wireless monitoring and controlling of the parameters of a widely-used induction motors through interfacing of Arduino with MATLAB.  This project monitors current waveform through IM, voltage waveform of induction motor, temperature(Celsius), RMS value of voltage and current, peak to peak values of current and voltage, Power, Power Factor, spectrogram  and magnitude spectrum

 Our prime objectives are:

Objective 1: Detail study of various parts of the motor and its working.

Objective 2: Understanding the Interfacing of motors with sensors.

Objective 3: Understanding of microcontroller, wireless modules and sensors.

Objective 4:Understanding and detail study of Internet of Things (IOT).

Project Implementation Method

In this project induction motors are monitored wirelessly to detect the variableness in motor’s parameters before the occurrence of the motor failure.  The Motor Current Signature Analysis is being used for the detection of mechanical fault in the motors. The parameters are being monitored and displayed on laptop.  In this project the parameters which we are going to monitored are motor voltage, current, RMS voltage and current, Power, Power Factor, magnitude spectrum, spectrogram and temperature.  In this manner the production will not come to halt and the deviation from the normal operating condition will cater in the little spam of time.  The respective goal is achieved using microcontroller, Laptop, sensors, CTs and PTs etc.  At last the data will be sent to the local/global web page and the parameters will be monitored.  In case of any deviation from the normal operating condition the alarm will be indicated on the smartphones.

The scope of the work includes the following:

Benefits of the Project

The induction motors are widely used in residential and commercial sector so it’s monitoring will result in more reliability and safe operation.  Following are some advantages which will be received through this project:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In 1st phase of the project, we use ½ HP (373Watts) single phase induction motor and DOL starter is employed for the starting of the motor. We are also using Current transformer for sensing current flowing through the motor, Potential transformer for sensing voltage across the motor and NTC thermistor for sensing the temperature of motor’s winding and all the three signals (i.e. current, voltage, temperature) will be given to the Arduino UNO analog pins.

In the next phase of this project the data is transmitted wirelessly to the laptop through WIFI module (ESP32) which has a built-in hall effect sensor for measuring RPM and temperature sensor.  The use of WIFI module will enable us to receive the data wirelessly on laptop screen. The data is stored in MySQL database and that Database further called in MATLAB for futther Processing and to implement MCSA technique in order to know about the health of induction motor.
