Connected Greenhouse using IoT

The name connected greenhouse suggests itself that all the measurements and information is collected at a single place through sensor board and the output is forwarded to the actuator board for further action as shown in the figure.

The name connected greenhouse suggests itself that all the measurements and information is collected at a single place through sensor board and the output is forwarded to the actuator board for further action as shown in the figure.
 


 

For professional approach one needs to study all the risks and unfavorable outcomes that might occur during the process so to tackle those, a research is done in this article to have a firm grip on all those risks and their outcomes.

In this project 2xESP8266 IC’s are used as a sensor and actuator board and communication is done using raspberry pi and two software’s namely MQTT and Node-RED.

Messaging protocol MQTT is bandwidth efficient for programming and controlling projects.

A single chip or controller is not sufficient to control the whole system in a practical project so to meet all the required results several devices are incorporated, connected to each other over a WLAN.

Block diagram above shows the overall structure of the whole project. Communication between both the components is done by MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Protocol). It is a machine-to-machine messaging technique, based on publish/subscribe methods.

The controlling element of all the components is raspberry pi, on which MQTT broker and node-RED application are installed.

A plant is placed inside a wooden frame with sides made of glass. A triangular frame has a wooden strip on which led strips are attached from the top for lightning. The structure is made of glass so as to see through it.
Within the structure heating   lamps   are   placed  to  provide  specific   heating  to    the  plant  and    a fan is also used for ventilation.
Power supply is also given to make the components active all the time. A continuous monitoring is required so for that purpose a soil moist sensor is used that continuously measures the moisture of   soil. A    photograph   is attached   that   shows glowing   LED’s and lamps inside a glass structure.
The center of all the communication is MQTT broker whose job is to mediate the transfer of message all over the network. An advantage of the network is that it can practically connect together unlimited number of devices.

Project Objectives

Objectives include:

  • Deisgn a wireless communication system.
  • Achieve a real time monitoring system.
  • Reduce human labor.
  • Design a separate application i.e adroid app etc.
  • Design a system that is to be monitored from any where in the world using MQTT broker technology.

Project Implementation Method

Implementation include sensor board that monitors all the required specfications and send it to the MQTT broker that decides to send it further for implementation. After that a message is sent to the obsever or subscriber. if the values exceed the limit specified a message is to be to the actuator board and checked for any issues and changes.

Complete model is placed inside a glass and monitored.

  • Can be installed easily requiring less space and time.

  • Can be used for any type of enviroment and place.
  • Less time consuming and less cost effectiev technique.
  • It is a great favor to agricultrue sector especially farmers.
