Project Summary

We are designing a camera-based scanner for checkout counters of grocery stores that will automatically scan all the products that have been placed on the conveyor belt. Instead of scanning the barcodes of each product one by one manually, this scanner will detect multiple items at the same time. The billing database would contain product name, price and other specific information. After scanning the product, it will automatically fetch the data of certain product from database and will add it to the invoice. It will also contain a user-friendly GUI which will make it easier for employees to understand the invoice.

Project Objectives

  • Reduce waiting time on checkout counters.
  • Reduce the high requirement for workforce.
  • Create a faster and more efficient checkout process.
  • Eliminates the need of manually scanning the barcodes of each item.
  • The system reduces much of human efforts in calculating bill especially for huge products.

Project Implementation Method

We will be using object detection on the products by training the dataset. After detection it will look into the database and fetch the possible information related to the product and create an invoice.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final deliverable will contain a software and some hardware components.

Software would contain of a GUI and a database which will help in creating an invoice bill.

Hardware would contain 

  • a conveyor belt that will be used to move multiple products
  • a camera scanner that  will scan the products
