Comparative study on Hydroxyapatite extraction from bovine and caprine bone
Statement of purpose
Objectives:
Ø Extraction of hydroxyapatite from Bovine and Caprine bone.
Ø Characterization of hydroxyapatite by using XRD and FTIR.
Ø Comparison of results on the basis of molarity, temperature and time.
Motivation:
The biomaterial is an emerging and challenging field in the healthcare sector. It has several applications in medicine such as prosthetics, orthopedics, dentistry, tissue engineering, and drug delivery system. We are fascinated to work in this field as our final year project. Working in the domain of biomaterials, we initiate our work based on “Comparative study on Hydroxyapatite extraction from Bovine and Caprine bone”. Hydroxyapatite has widely been used in various applications due to their excellent biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconduction characteristics. This material may be employed in many forms such as porous blocks, dense body, granular forms and hybrid composites for various biomedical applications..
Materials and devices required:
Materials
• Bones (Bovine and Caprine).
• Deionized water
• Sodium hydroxide
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Acetone
Machine and devices
• Automatic furnace
• Water bath
• Oven
• pH meter
Methodology
Ø Cleaning of raw bones.
Ø Chemical treatment of clean bones.
Ø Thermal treatment of samples.
Ø Characterization of the final product.
Result
The use of bones for the extraction of hydroxyapatite provide an environmentally beneficial and cost-effective medical grade biocompatible material. The characterization will confirm the purity and crystallinity of the final product.
OBJECTIVES:
Ø Extraction of hydroxyapatite from Bovine and Caprine bone.
Ø Characterization of hydroxyapatite by using XRD and FTIR.
Ø Comparison of results on the basis of molarity, temperature and time.
Starting from the collection of bones we boiled the bones with water to remove the muscular attachments and then cleaned the bones with a chemical solution(acetone & deionized water). then we divided bones into 10 samples and treat them with different concentration of chemicals. After chemical treatment, we calcinate the samples using the automatic furnace. In the last samples were grinded to reduce the particle size.
Technical details of final deliverable:
Bones of cow and goat were collected as a raw material., beakers for holding the samples that were dipped in a chemical solution. Evaporated plates used for calcination.Motor and pestle for grinding the samples. Airtight bags used for storage of samples. FTIR, XRD & SEM test of samples for characterization.
