Project Summary

Wireless technologies play an important role in every field like Health care devices, telecommunication & Long-Range Wireless Power etc. The development in Medical field like implantable medical devices (IMDs) ,minimally-invasive surgeries, better monitoring systems, and more comfortable scanning equipment that allows a patient to spend less time in recovery and more time enjoying a healthy life. The antenna is one of the major parts of these implantable medical devices. The more important aspect of antenna is its size. So here in this project we will propose a miniaturized compact antenna which operates on ISM band.

In our recent literature review, we observed that there are always need of miniaturized compact antenna. We studied different techniques for attaining a miniaturization. An optimization process is performed by designing antenna in simulation tool (high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS)), typical measurement techniques and then choosing the most appropriate dielectric material is used to achieve minimal dimensions of compact antenna.

We concluded from our literature review that the use of the higher relative permittivity material leads to a smaller and efficient compact antenna. In simulation, we noticed that higher permittivity materials such as Alumina ceramic (???????? = 9.9), Glass wafer (???????? = 10), Roger (???????? = 10.2), Teflon (???????? = 11), and Zirconium dioxide (Zro2) (???????? = 21), can cause remarkable size decreasing.

After getting simulation of miniaturized compact antenna which operates on ISM band. A compact miniaturized design of antenna is implement in Hard Form. For validating the performance of the proposed antenna, Hardware of antenna has to be tested and their result will be compare with the literature. After verification, antenna has to be tested in skin mimicking gel as test tissue to confirm the performance of the proposed antenna.

Project Objectives

  • Implantable medical devices have become more and more interesting for healthcare services. Implanted biomedical devices having great attention in finding solutions to complex medical conditions.
  • Our main objective of this project is to miniaturize the implantable antenna. The devices which implants in human body, produces inconvenience in the patient rest due to their size. So we need to design a miniaturized compact antenna which reduce the size of these implantable medical devices.
  • The operating frequency, bandwidth, safety limit, efficiency and geometry miniaturization are fundamental aspects of the designing implantable antenna that are also sensitive to size reduction.
  • An implantable antenna aims at minimizing the volume occupation, at facilitating the integration with all the components constituting the device and at obtaining the required EM performances.
  • Verify the performance of developed implantable antennas to compare the literature’s miniaturized antennas.
  • Inserting antenna in the skin mimicking Gel and also verify the properties with other implantable antenna in simulation.

Implantable medical devices have become more and more interesting for healthcare services. The interest in implantable devices for biomedical telemetry has remarkably increased. The antenna is one of the most important part of these implantable medical devices. The antenna plays the most significant role in the wireless data transmission.

The antenna is intended to be used for several applications, endoscopy, glucose and blood pressure monitoring, insulin pumps, pacemaker communication and retinal prosthesis.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Simulation model of the compact antenna placed in free space operating at ISM band in HFSS.
  • Measured result of the proposed compact antenna in free space (Hardware of the compact antenna).
  • Simulation of the skin mimicking gel in HFSS.
  • Simulation results of the proposed antenna placed in skin mimicking gel.
