Project Summary

This project aims the development of a cost effective automated egg hatchery system for chicken eggs incubation to facilitate the poultry industry in Pakistan The poultry sector is one of the most organized and vibrant segments of the agriculture industry of Pakistan. Poultry Sector has contributed 1.3 percent in GDP during 2019-20 while its contribution in agriculture and livestock value added stood at 7.1% and 12.8 % respectively. Poultry meat contributes 30.0% of the total meat production in the country. Poultry Industry is more than Rs. 400.00 billion [].

A poultry hatchery is a facility where eggs are hatched under artificial conditions. It may be used for ex-sit conservation purposes, i.e. to breed rare or endangered species under controlled conditions; alternatively, it may be for economic reasons. The chicken egg hatching incubator machine are equipped with humidity and temperature sensors that able to automatically regulate and monitor the temperature and humidity in the incubator to create the ideal condition to incubate chicken egg. The proposed system will be equipped with the latest features to hatch eggs; for instance candling through infertile egg identification using basic image acquisition, and egg turning that employs crank-rocker mechanism and a hatching chamber. The system will also have the monitoring features i.e. Cloud based Android Application, the user can have real-time data of the day-to-day status of the incubator's parameters.

Project Objectives

The success of the hatch machine is most critical and largely determined by the temperature and humidity stability in the incubator.

  1. To develop a fully automated hatchery system with maximum success rate.
  2. To develop a system with improved measure and control the environmental parameters of chicken hatchery like temperature humidity, cooling and ventilation.
  3. Develop a cloud based android application to remotely access and monitor the system. The system will be capable to store data on cloud that will be used for analysis.
  4. To develop a cost effective system with best features so the system can be customized affordable by the mid-range to large-range customers.

Project Implementation Method

The project implementation consist of number of stages:

  1. Collection of Needs

The client and the developer jointly define identify requirements and the system created. In this stage extensive research are made to study the available machines in the market. A number of visits will be made to local and other cities poultry farms to collect the optimal requirements for the system.

  1. Identify the platform and Hardware modules

The working system will required the number of sensors controllers and actuators.  The major hardware modules for the project will be required are:

  • The DH21 sensor will detect the temperature and humidity.
  • The ESP-32 microcontroller for controlling.
  • The Rasberry pi3 with camera will be used as web server and data mining techniques implementation,
  1. Build a prototype

 Building prototypes by making temporary designs that focus on serving customers, for example, such as making input and output formats.

  1. Evaluation of the prototype

 This stage is carried out by the client, whether the prototype is built, according to customer wants and needs. If it is not suitable, the prototype will be revised by repeating

Benefits of the Project

The egg incubator is the most supportive machine for an egg to incubate as well as hatch successfully, the low cost incubators have very limited features of controlling humidity and temperature thus reducing the success rate. The idea is to develop a low cost fully automated hatchery system with maximum success rate.

The poultry sector is an important and vibrant segment of agriculture in Pakistan with a significant contribution to the national GDP (1.3%). The intention of this project is to locally design and developed a reliable system to facilitate the poultry industry of Pakistan.

The hatchery machines are imported from china and other countries hence the project has significant potential to satisfy the market demand for fully featured hatchery machine.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The system will consist of sensing unit DTH22 temperature and humidity sensor and ESP32 will be responsible to regulate the condition by controlling light bulb as heating element and humidifier to humidify in the incubator, while PIR sensor is used to detect the chicks that has been hatched.

Turning unit is developed using the 12Vdc gear motor that is connected with a timer while the indicating unit is programmed to have trigger the buzzer and emergency flash light when PIR have sense movement in the incubator. The most ideal temperature to hatch chicken egg is commonly known to be 37.5oC. By having the temperature too high or too low will greatly effect on the growth of the egg. 

The cloud database firebase will be setup to record incubator parameters like temperature, humidity etc. An android Application will be designed to monitor and control the hatchery machine. A cloud server will be setup on raspberry Pie.
