Project Title

Characterization of Electromyography EMG Signals Based on Gender Difference

Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject Summary

Myoelectric pattern recognition techniques have been widely used in research for prosthetics control over the last few years. EMG of upper and lower limb muscles of males and females has been used to see the efficiency of features and classifiers. But the gap that we identify is that no research has been carried out to find the difference in EMG of males and females for their forearm muscles specifically the flexors and extensors which support the wrist movements. Similarly, the features that have been used for the EMG of males and females are general. Research is silent on recommending the separate features for the males and females. Keeping in mind all this, the aims of the project are to evaluate the difference in EMG of males and females for their flexors and extensors of forearm muscles and then to evaluate the best features separately for both genders.

Project Objectives

As mentioned earlier in the project summary, the aims of our project are the following:

Project Implementation Method

The methodology of the project can be explained as follows:

Benefits of the Project

Myoelectric control of prosthesis via pattern recognition is the hot topic in research nowadays. Efforts by the researchers are carried out to design the prosthesis working more efficiently and productively. Our project has aims which would play a significant role in artificial intelligence. The foremost aim of medical science is to provide relief and convenience to the patients having no forelimbs and providing them with artificial forelimbs. Thus, research is the first step towards implementing an idea. Our targets are males and females whose EMG signals may vary. For them, the features are used categorically so far in research, but we want to evaluate separate best features for them which would increase the classifiers' working and distinguishing the separate hand movements by them. Eventually, this would help in designing the separate prosthetics for males and females based on their EMG difference.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are currently on the initial stage of the project i.e. research in the small environment of our university. Due to less time, facilities and finances, the project is only carried out on the healthy subjects who are also students. However, if the budget and equipment are provided, the project can be extended to implement on the real patients having wrist abnormalities. Not only research but designing the prosthesis requires a lot of hard work, budget, time, consistency, and trials. Being undergraduate students, we can take the first step by carrying out research on the healthy subjects' EMG of flexor and extensor muscles. This would help us to confirm the difference in the EMG of males and females and evaluating separate features for them by feeding them to classifiers. These features and classifiers can then be utilized to eventually design separate prosthesis for males and females which would be a wonderful contribution towards medical and health science.
