Cascaded H bridge Multilevel Inverter
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryTo convert energy from renewable sources (in the form of DC power) to some useful form (in form of AC power), we use multilevel inverter because it gives a high output power from medium voltage source. Sources like batteries, super capacitors, solar panels are medium voltage sources. The multi level inverter consists of several switches. In the multilevel inverter, the arrangement switches’ angles are very important. One of the basic and well-known topology among all multilevel inverters is Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter. It can be used for both single and three phase conversion.
It has some attractive features such as:
1. It has the ability to produce output waveform with little Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
2. If some fault occurs in the circuit, the faulty part can be isolated by using better control strategy to ensure the continuous current supply to the load.
3. It has the ability to produce higher output voltage and power.
4. It requires less number of components than any other topology.
Project ObjectivesIn an underdeveloped country like Pakistan, energy crises has become an issue. Pakistan has been used to import energy from past many years and is mainly dependent on fossil fuels to meet its energy requirements. But, the prices of fossil fuel are increasing day by day. So, the cost of the importing Oil is creating a dent on Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves. The rising oil price along with the rising demand for uninterrupted power, is creating additional pressure on the already fragile electricity grid of Pakistan. This is a serious issue regarding energy crises and needs to carve out the ways which lead to overcome it. To overcome this issue, renewable energy systems have a great importance because of efficiency and cost effectiveness. Feasible renewable energy sources in Pakistan are wind energy, solar energy and biomass energy. As a result of increasing demand of renewable energy technologies, the use of power electronic converters/inverters is increasing day by day.
Project Implementation MethodFirst of all, we have to study different multilevel inverters, and their topologies. Then we have to go through different modulation and control techniques in terms of their suitability for the operation of a multilevel inverter. After going through literature review and selecting components for hardware, we have to Implement the selected techniques in MATLAB to get the desired results. The next step is to compare the performance of the implemented techniques in terms of desired power and voltage quality. The last and the most important step is to implement our proect on hardware and to get the required output.
Benefits of the ProjectFollowing are some applications where CHB inverter is used:
It is used in motor drives.
It is used in active filters.
It is used in Electric Hybrid Vehicle Drives.
It is used in DC power source utilization.
It is used as a power factor compensator.
It is used in back to back frequency link systems
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe main and the most important deliverable of our project is to convert DC supply to AC supply. Our main target is to get minimum total harmonic distortion in our output wave and to approach ideal sinusoidal wave. To approach ideal sinusoidal wave, we have to make as many voltage levels as we can achieve to get a smooth curve. We have to construct a controlled feedback system as well so that our output will be continously compared with the pure sinusoidal wave to get its maximum approximation
