Project Title

Cardiac catherzation simulator

Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject Summary

This final year research and development project design a simulator to train doctors and newbie to learn steps to perform a successful angioplasty procedure. The angioplasty is a procedure used to widen the vessels narrowed by stenosis or occlusions. The movement of catheter inside artery is tracked and visualized. The project is implemented through low-cost hardware and open source software. Tracking catheter inside the artery during the angioplasty procedure is important to avoid future complications in patient health recovery. Examples include percutaneous transluminal angioplasty describes entry through the skin (percutaneous), and in the case of a procedure involve the coronary arteries, the point of entry could be the femoral artery. We are going to made the toolbox  that will perform the procedure through radial artery access, it means that  fresh doctors use the radial artery in the wrist as the entry point for the catheter. The Doctors threads the thin catheter through the body’s network of arteries in the arm and into the chest, eventually reaching the heart.

Project Objectives

The objectives of this final year project are:

  1. To investigate the path of arteries during the insertion of catheter
  2. To develop a simulator to facilitate the cardiologist to perform the angioplasty procedure

Project Implementation Method

We will design a box module in which encoder with wheel module is fixed in such a way that as a catheter pass beneath the wheel the encoder will give the distance measurement of the length of catheter inserted and display it.
we will control the catheter movement measurement with the help of programming
Programming will be done in Arduino IDE and WEB –G -L.
Result of catheter movement will be displayed on LCD that will be fixed on box module.
Secondly, the result of measurement in Lcd also will be transmitted through Bluetooth system in to the computer.
Bluetooth system embedded in the box will be the pathway of communication system between the box (hardware) and the software in computer.
We will generate the 2D or 3D image of heart in WEB -G –L  software that will show the passage and movement  of catheter in Heart.

Benefits of the Project

Flexible and intuitive to set up and use
Small foot print — can be placed anywhere
Catheter based simulator used in neuro surgeries in future
70% of all procedures performed by vascular surgeons are at least partially catheter-based so for fresh doctors it  will help to train them.
