Building Automation System Using PLC And SCADA

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

In recent years, due to the energy crises, the recognition of energy sources is limited, and there is the tendency to have a cleaner and comfortable environment leading to development in using energy as optimally as possible. Building automation systems (BAS) provide automatic control of the conditions of environments. The core domain of BAS is the automation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems in large functional buildings. In this project, we present a building automation system USING PLC and SCADA. The system supports various sensor functions with a very practical and low-cost system configuration. Our project-based on power management and safety protection of buildings. All the parameters are being processed and can be constantly monitored with the help of the SCADA system, which updates the progress in the control room being manned by the individuals. Additionally, this idea can be extended to many more applications like car parking, security systems with LCD screens, elevator control, and common announcement system.

Project Objectives

1: Developing a system to reduce human intervention in the process by using PLC and SCADA.

2: To develop a system that detects the fire in order to prevent damage/explosion.

3: Developing a  SCADA system for monitored, gathered and process data in real-time.

Project Implementation Method

After studying different research papers and analyses of their implementation methods, we organize our project implementation into two parts:

Hardware Implementation:-

1: First we have checked the compatibility of sensors with PLC. As our selected sensors are not compatible with PLC we design a triggering circuit for sensors to interface with PLC. For this, we increase the current of sensors with the help of transistors and proper values of resistors to trigger the 5V relay.

2: Making a connection of sensors with PLC in the prototype of 2 rooms.

Software Implementation:-

In this step, we design our model on Proteus and PLC software Winproladder for simulation, fritzing for PCB designing, Siemens TIA Portal for SCADA implementation.

Benefits of the Project

Less power consumption: It will be a benefit for the building managers to reduce power consumption.

Water management: In a manual control system, the water is not properly managed by the carelessness of people but in this system, water is properly managed. So there is no wastage of water.

Fire protection:  It will be a benefit for the building that it will be protected from fire. Fire alarms provide audible alerts. The advantages of installing a fire alarm system are numerous. Having systems in buildings that will help keep safe when emergencies occur are essential.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The technical view of our project is described below in the form of block view:-

As in the figure shows, on the left-hand side, there are the input field devices and on the right hand, there are output field devices. In the center, there is a controller called PLC(Programmable Logic Controller). Depending upon the condition PLC can control the processes. In this project, we have control 5 features i.e Internal lights, external lights, fire detection, water level control and fans control in the room. All these processes can be accessed, monitored and control on the screen which can be named SCADA. Graphical and Historical display can easily be viewed by the user on-screen. Also, the user has the ability to change the setpoints directly from SCADA.
