Project Title

Buffliating Machine

Project Area of Specialization

Wearables and Implantable

Project Summary

  • Milking machines do not operate on local buffalos which work on suction principle

  • As the pressure is applied on the teats, the teats are damaged and blood flows.

  • This causes contamination of milk and injury to the buffalo

  • The hand milking method is studied and observed in detail. After detail analyssis research and discussion, the project is broken down into 4 major parts.

    1. Oscillatory motion mechanism

    2. Gripper Design and Fabrication

    3. Feedback System

    4. Assembly

  • Due to this problem, milk obtained from buffaloes is mostly through hand milking

  • For hand milking labor is required which is expensive

  • The milk is not harvested efficiently and cost of milk extraction is high

  • Gripper Design:

    • In this part the goal is to design and fabricate a gripper which must have following properties:

    • The gripper should be safe and comfortable for the buffalo during operation

    • The gripper should be of a standard size so that it can be used on different teat sizes and shapes without any changes

    • The gripper should mimic the stripping method of milking and milk should flow out when in oscillatory motion.

    Oscillatory motion:

    • In this part we design and implement an oscillatory motion mechanism

    • The oscillatory mechanism should apply the required force on the teats

    • The oscillatory mechanism should be safe during operation

    • The oscillatory mechanism should be automatic

    • Should stop when no milk is flowing

Feedback system: In this part we design a system for feedback for milkflow

    • The systems detects the milk flow

    • The systems checks if milk is flowing or not during the oscillatory motion

    • The System sends commands to the oscillatory motion to keep operating or stop the operation in case no milk is flowing

Project Objectives

  • Our objective is to design and fabricate a machine that automates the process of milk harvest

  • The approach is to study and observe the hand milking method in depth

  • The goal is to design a solution which mimics the hand milking method of milk extraction

Project Implementation Method

The hand milking method is studied and observed in detail. After detail analyssis research and discussion, the project is broken down into 4 major parts.

  1. Oscillatory motion mechanism

  2. Gripper Design and Fabrication

  3. Feedback System

  4. Assembly

Objectives of each part are defined in detail. Work is done step by step to meet the defined objectives that are set for each part. First work on Gripper and feedback system is done in parallel, after achieving the objectives of Gripper and Feedback system we proceed to for Oscillatory motion mechanism. In the end Assembly of all the system is done and a final test is run.

Gripper Design:

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of the projects are

  • The increase speed of extraction of the milk of the buffalo
  • The lack of pain and contamination of blood in the milk extracted
  • It follows the natural process of a hand milking.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Design of Gripper: For the gripper the first design is prepared as follows:

Add first design figure:

The material used for part is silicon. The design consists of two pars which are identical. The part is thick on the top and gradually becomes thin at the bottom. The idea behind this design is that as the teat of the buffalo is pressed between the two parts. The upper part of the teat is pressed first and the teat is locked from the top as to stop the milk from being pushed upward into the udder. As the part is pushed further gradually the teat is pressed downwards. It is assumed that a differential will be created along the teat and milk will be pushed downward.

For the testing of the gripper an equipment was made as shown in fig 2. This equipment design allows us to attach different grippers on it easily and testing is made simple. The two rods are attached using hinges at one end. On the roads a rectangular plate is attached. On these plates we attach our prepared grippers using adhesives.

The advantage of this equipment is to assist in testing of gripper. As the teat is pressed between the gripper, an equal amount of force is applied from both sides. The equipment also helps to enhance the force on the teats.
