Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryAccording to the World Health Organization, approximately 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired, 39 million are blind and 246 have low vision.
The current proposed system aims at enabling blind and visually impaired people to be more independent at home just with the help of their android mobile phones and a small hardware device.
The system provides them four major functionalities including Path Guidance along with Hurdle Detection and Object Identification, Face Identification and Currency Identification.
Project ObjectivesThe major objective of this project is to bring ease to the blind and visually impaired people by:
- Providing them indoor navigation.
- Helping them identify if there is any hurdle ahead.
- Helping them identify objects.
- Helping them identify the people around them.
- Helping them identify the amount of currency.
The project will be completed over a period of 12 months where the each module will be assigned the following time slots.
- Hurdle Detection: July 1, 2018-October 31, 2018
- Currency Identification: November 1, 2018-Janurary 31, 2019.
- Object Identification: Feburary 1, 2019-April 30, 2019.
- Path Guidance: May 1, 2019-July 1, 2019.
The tools and technologies used for this project implementation are as follows:

- OpenCV
- Tensor Flow

- Bluetooth Device
- Arduino UNO
- Beacons
- Vibrarting Moters
The benefits of this project are as follows:
- The blind and visually impiared people will be far less dependent.
- They will know if there is any hurdle on their way.
- They can get step by step indoor path guidance from one point to another.
- They can identify if the people around them are known or unknown.
- They can identify the amount of the currency.
- They can identify objects around them.
The final deliverable of the project will be an android application providing Face Identification, Currency Identification and Object Identification along with an integrated wearable hardware device used for Hurdle Detection and Path Guidance.
