Blind Navigation System using Acoustic Tones
Our project is Blind navigation system. Our aim is to provide facility for visually impaired people while walking and help them in avoiding obstacles. Our product proposes a simple image processing-based guidance system for solving the navigation problems for such people and achieving obstacle avoidance to enable them to travel smoothly from one location to another with greater awareness of their surroundings. The developed system includes a wearable computer, stereo cameras as vision sensor, EOG electrodes and stereo earphones, all installed in a helmet. The video of the scene in front of visually impaired person is recorded by the
video camera installed and multiple frames are taken, means that video is converted to list of images. The position of the scene is determined by the movement of the eyeballs using EOG signals. In this way, image of the scene to which the person is watching is captured. It can be seen from observation that the other senses(i-e hearing, touch ) of visually impaired people are very strong and they can navigate their environment through these senses, so our product will calculate intensities of the scene and will produce different tones which will help these people in understanding of their environment and to move smoothly.
We implement this project on raspberry pi. The camera will be attached to the raspberry pi which is used as vision sensor i-e recording video of the scene. The AgCl electrodes and EOG leads are used to obtained EOG signals from eyes which are then passed through amplifier and then through filters to get a noise free signals. These signals are then used to move the mouse cursor by coding in python. Image processing in python finds the mouse cursor position and process only that part of the scene. Utrasonic sensor is used to find the distance of an object. At the end, a tone is generated in earphones which help blinds in navigating their environment. Frequency of the tones shows distance of the object from the person while amplitude of the tone shows intensity of the image.
This project has a lot of benefits. It is different from other devices made for blind navigation till date. It uses EOG concept which makes it different from other devices. Furthormore it is in the form of a cap which is very comfortable for the users. It is using the hearing sense of blinds for navigation. It is shown from observatiions that blinds can get help from hearing in navigating their environment. Our project uses beautiful combination of EOG signals and image processing.
We will complete our project till the said dates. We will deliver a good product the customers which will help them more than the available products. After that we will do some real time testing so that it may be chenged according to the market demand.
