Project Summary

Advancements in the development of automation in aerial robotics has created endless applications by utilizing autonomous drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Motivated by the idea of drone performances for  entertainment, we present a robust and safe swarming approach for a multi-UAV teaming light show. The high-precision autonomous formation flight is achieved with a centralized control method with a single ground control station (GCS). The proposed system includes intelligent non-colliding trajectory generation and safety features such as UAV status monitoring, geo-fencing and failsafe mechanisms for out-of-bound control.

  • Design and fabrication of two quadrotor UAVs.
  • Software implementation of Leader-Follower swarm algorithm as baseline.
  • Software-in-the-loop simulation of Leader-Follower swarm with five UAVs.
  • Demonstration of  Leader-Follower swarm with two UAVs.
  • Software implementation of autonomous swarm navigation using mix integer quadratic programing algorithm.
  • Software-in-the-loop simulation of autonomous swarm navigation with five UAVs.
  • Demonstration of  MIQP based autonomous swarm navigation.

Benefits of the Project

UAV market continues to soar in the entertainment field. UAV based light shows and performances are becoming the new trend. It is a basically a more environment friendly way of doing fireworks which are banned due to safety and environment hazards. Therefore, it is secure, produces no pollution, easy to implement and has a wide variety of doing entertainment shows. It also has commercial and economical advantage as it can be reused and readjusted according to user’s requirements.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Simulation and demonstration of leader follower swarm. Simulation of MIQP swarm and demonstration of  autonomous navigation of UAVs swarm.
