Project Summary

An Autonomous and Portable sun-tracking solar energy harnessing system, is a power system that mimics the behaviour of a sunflower. It has 5 solar panels of 10W each that are arranged in such a way to behave like petals in the sunflower. It has a solar tracking mechanism which enables the sunflower(system) to track the position of the sun and move in the direction of sun respectively.It also has a mechanism such that when the system is non operational all the panels fold into a compact closed form such that all panels are stacked behind the first panel, when the system is fully operational all the panels unfold into an open form like that of a sunflower. In Its compact form It becomes extremely portable that can be placed in the trunk of the car and can be shifted anywhere easily.

Project Objectives

The main objective of the project is the Design and Fabrication of an Autonomous and Portable single/double axis sun-tracking solar energy harnessing system. The sub-objectives of this project are;

  • Design and Fabrication of the mechanical structure of the system.
  • Design and Testing of electrical circuitry of system.
  • To acquire the neccesary equipment for the system including the  solar panels, motors, sensors etc.
  • Individual component testing and calibration of the system.
  • Interfacing the mechanical structure of the system with its the electrical circuitry and components.
  • Programming and algorithm development for system.

Project Implementation Method

The Implementation method of the project is;

  • Design and Fabrication of mechanical structure.
  • Design and Testing of electrical circuitry.
  • Acquire the neccesary equipment including solar panels, motors, sensors etc.
  • Individual component testing and calibration.
  • Interfacing the mechanical structure with the electrical circuitry and components.
  • Programming and algorithm development for the system.
  • Final testing of the compliant system.

Benefits of the Project

The Benefits of the project are;

  • No need of extra wiring or additional drill holes. 
  • Low space requirement.
  • Low maintenance requirement.
  • Extremely portable.
  • Fullfil energy requirement of travellers or campers.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A lightweight portable solar modular system capable of fullfilling the energy requirements of travelers etc. The tentative overall parameters are;

  • Weight 25 kg.
  • Height 3ft to 4ft.
  • Output Power 50W.
