Project Summary

Fretting wear is the type of wear that occurs between contact bodies by the application of high frequency, amplitude at micron level, load and lubrication. Fretting Wear behavior of different materials can be investigated by using a special, innovative and affordable designed and fabricated fretting wear apparatus which contains the crank fluctuating mechanism and data acquisition system. The experimental set up has the ability to generate   frequency ranging from 05Hz to 100Hz, amplitude ranging from 20µm to 200µm. Investigations for estimation of fretting wear rate is determined because in some aspects of selection of material for the specific component of mechanical contact and by consideration of the working condition of the relevant component and durable material is selected in order to maximize the life of component. Fretting wear estimation will be experimentally investigated by performing experiments on different material having spherical and elliptical contacts with variable frequency and amplitude. Data acquisition for the all the variables from experimental setup is proposed.

Project Objectives

To automate fretting wear test bench for checking of wear properties of different materials.

  • To control and ensure the live constant fluctuating frequency of pivoted arm for variable applied loading conditions for constant motor RPMs. (controller (PWM module), accelerometer, digital gauge).
  • To find out live wear depth of pin and strip through digital distance gauge.
  • To check and compare the experimental data with recent studies available.

Project Implementation Method

  1. Assurance of constant reciprocating frequency of pivoted arm for variable applied loading conditions will be carried out through feedback close loop system for constant motor RPMs. (RPM sensor, Controller, Servo motor)
  2.  The live wear depth of pin and strip will be measured through digital distance gauge (dial gauges) and LVDT sensor.
  3. The coefficient of friction between Pin and Pivoted Arm for different operating conditions can be found out by using Acceleration/Force sensor.

Benefits of the Project

By the  help of the above results students will  be enable to calculate the wear in the  vibratory machinery by using  pin on disc fluctuating mechanism and innovate the ideas to reduce and overcome the wear and friction at the center of  pin by using different lubricants during the fluctuation of the disc.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Design and fabrication of fretting wear test bench that has capability to generate amplitude ranging from 20um to 200um and frequency from 5Hz to 100Hz.
  • Fretting wear estimation of different steel on steel having spherical and elliptical contacts.
  • Recommendation of different steel on steel contacts at different frequencies and amplitudes.
