Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast Receiver
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryThe reason for opting this project is its advanced application for surveillance system. There are very few countries who are manufacturing ADS-B and majority of the aviation organizations are acquiring it from them including CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) as it is part of their future plan. Building ADS-B receiver would be a major step towards its local manufacturing and commercialization. ADS-B is Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast the next generation surveillance technology as compare to radar since it have high accuracy, less error and stronger surveillance abilities. We are trying to build its receiver station which will receive messages on 1090MHz and it would be displayed live. This ADS-B receiver will be composed of 4 main sections
1: An Antenna for 1090MHz.
2: A mini ADSB receiver for 1090Mhz.
3: A FPGA based Decoder.
Here we are using FPGA instead of PIC to build decoder because it will give us more frameworks per sec and better information of the surveillance.
4: Display system with surveillance software
Project ObjectivesWe are trying to make complete ADS-B station with all its application it will receive the information in the form of electromagnetic wave of frequency 1090MHz and will display a proper and more informative results because of its modification we are trying to do by using FPGA as a decoder instead of PIC which will increase the number of frameworks as compare to PIC and the reception range as PIC decodes 1Mbit/sec which means one framework at a time but by using FPGA it will be faster because of its parallel processing application.
Project Implementation MethodWhen the signal will be catch by the antenna, it will be received at the ADS-B where it will pass through filters and then ADC (Analog to Digital convertor) where it will be divided into the frequency ranges passing , these frequency ranges will be decoded at the decoder and will convert into the binary codes these binary codes will process it usually it is built on PIC but here we will be using FPGA for more and better framework and more reception range which would give a far more better picture of the received information and more detailed surveillance can be done.
Benefits of the Project- Advanced and precised system
- Stand alone, Low cost system
- No ancillary equipment required
- Safe low power output
- An Antenna to receive signal
- MAX1192 for sampling match
- Using FPGA for decoding will allow signal oversampling
- Noise surpression van be done using two algorithm running in parallel, especially for far distant planes up to 20% more frames are decoded.
- Lantronix Xport will be equipped since PC USB which will be serial.
- ATMEL support: On the bottom, you can solder an Atmel ATMEGA processor for own extensions. There are two pin headers which allow access to all pins of the AVR. The AVR also has access to all serial interfaces. Ideas here are further processing of the frames, local LCD display.
- Power supply is via USB port, but external 5V/100mA (expect more when using Xport or Bluetooth) can be applied separately.
