AR Indoor Navigation System

The main objectives is to study and develop a hybrid application called Smart Nav with the use of Augmented Reality technology for design and decoration that will help customers visualize routes for indoor navigation. System to assist users in identifying their locations easily.

Project Summary

  • This project is based on a hybrid application that uses the Augmented Reality techniques has been presented that helps the user to navigate the user to desire spot in place like railway stations or airport.
  • Systems will help the customer to view the navigation footsteps object virtually in real environment when going through the way.
  • Due to this system visitor will know where is the desire spot in public place like Airport, Hospitals,Shopping Malls without asking someone help.
  • Work is to design a new method to develop indoor positioning navigation system without using wireless technology through image processing.

Project Objectives

The main objectives is to study and develop a hybrid application called Smart Nav with the use of Augmented Reality technology for design and decoration that will help customers visualize routes for indoor navigation.

  • System to assist users in identifying their locations easily.
  • Visualizing the routes in the real world can be made possible through Augmented Reality applications.
  • When starting the application, the AR Core device is turned off, only after scanning a QR code the AR Core device turns on and localization can happen.
  • In order to compensate intrinsic drift from the cold start QR codes can be scanned whilst navigating to update the blue dot to the correct location.
  • The work also aims to develop an interactive indoor navigation system.
  • Augmented reality is being used to superimpose the directional signage on the real view of the indoor environment in 3D form.
  • Along with the 3D guides, voice guidance will be output from the system to assist users in identifying their locations easily.
  • Visualizing the routes in the real world can be made possible through Augmented Reality applications.

Project Implementation Method

Phase-1

The first phase will be a Planning phase. In this phase we will make project plans that how we build our project and set project goals and set a schedule for the project closure

Phase-II

The second phase is a design phase. In this phase we will create a mockup for our project how the User Interface (UI) will look like and relation between classes and screens.

Phase-III

The third phase is Implementation phase. In this phase will be start implement strategies which we designed in previous phase and start coding for the project.   

Phase-1V

The Fourth phase is testing phase. After development and implementation phase we will test the project whether the project is working or not, if not make amendments 2nd and 3rd phase again.

Phase-V

The fifth phase will be maintenance phase. This phase will include after service for the customer and future improvement regarding the project.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of this project is to guide users to find thier route as soon as possible without wasting any time or searching for sign boards etc. 

  • Due to this project visitor will know where is the desire spot in public place like Airport, Hospitals, Shopping Malls, Universities without asking someone's help.
  • For future improvement we will introduce some new possible options like member login for organization to track a person where he/she is in the organization through RSSI, a real time location tracer for your employees and it will navigate you to the person where he is.
  • We are also planning to integrate our app with Google maps for outdoor navigation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project is to develop an interactive indoor navigation system based on Augmented reality and it is being used to superimpose the directional signage on the real view of the indoor environment in 3D form. Along with the 3D guides, voice guidance will be output from the system to assist users in identifying their locations easily. Visualizing the routes in the real world can be made possible through Augmented Reality applications.

  • Import indoor map data to Mapbox: In phase one we uploaded a marker image of our office blueprint to Mapbox Studio and created a dataset containing vector features such as walls, rooms, and hallways.
  • Consuming the custom data in Unity: In the second phase, we rendered a 3D map in Unity, so the rooms were scaled and positioned 1:1 with real-world space.
  • See it localized in world scale AR: In the third phase, we created a seamless augmented reality navigation experience with localized 3D features of our office space.
