Project Title

Applications of Software Define Radio SDR in Analog Communication using Hack RF One

Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject Summary
HackRF, One works as a sound card of the computer. It processes Analog and Digital Signals to
Radio waveforms allowing the integration of large-scale communication networks. It is designed to
test, develop, improvise, and modify contemporary Radio Frequency systems. It is manufactured by
Great Scott Gadgets. It is able to transmit and receive signals. The transmission power rating is 1-
50mW. Its operating frequency ranges from 1MHz-6GHz. We can use it as a transmitter and as a
receiver.
In this project, we will configure this device to study the fundamental analog communication
systems such as AM receiver, FM receiver, Spectrum Analyzer.

  • To learn how to configure a programmable RF module that will be Software Defined Radio (SDR).
  • To learn GNU radio and its applications in Analog Communication.
  • To learn Python language to develop application for specific telecommunication module.
  • To design, implement and test analog communication systems such as AM Receiver, FM Receiver etc
Project Implementation Method
Block level coding based on GNU Radio over Linux operating system and python is used to configure a Software Defined Radio (SDR) namely HackRF One.
HackRF One is an SDR that act as an open source platform capable of transmitting the radio signals ranges from 1MHZ to 6GHZ, alongside having the capability of operating like a USB peripheral. Furthermore, the hardware
platform of this device can be programmed according to the requirements of the project, so making it suitable for use as
standalone device.
Thus, in this project we will implement and test (real time) AM Receiver,FM Receiver systems using the above coding
techniques on HackRF One SDR device.

  • Open Source
  • It is cost-efficient.
  • It is a low-power device; thus, it isles hazardous.
  • It supports the concept of Green Cellular Network.
  • Wideband system, thus a single device can be used to test different telecommunication standards.
  • Different off-the self-communication systems can be configured using one device (multi purpose module)
Technical Details of Final Deliverable
In this project we will configure and test different telecommunication systems using two HackRF One module, one as a transmitter and the other as a receiver. Furthermore, we will test (real time) AM Receiver and FM Receiver systems using the above coding techniques on HackRF One SDR device.
