Project Summary

This is our final year project for the requirement of fulfilment of degree. With help of Solidworks software we desgined a model of compound parabolic concentrator. Then by using CNC machine we made a practical model of compound parabolic concentrator. We are analysing the solar flux distribution in compound parabolic concentrator. CPC are non imaging concentrators which do not form image on the absorber. They have the capability of refelcting all the incident radiation to the absorber.

After obtaining the results from experiment we demonstrating our result using MATLAB.  We are calculating solar flux in different days to get deeper understanding.

Project Objectives

At the present time there is a rapid expansion for the develoment of concentrated photovotaic (CPV) system for the conversion of concentrating solar energy in to electrical energy.

Due to the climate change and diminishing of fossil fuels, renewable sources of energy has gained importance in quick time. Solar energy can be the alternative energy source as it is affordable, most abundant and cleanest form of energy on earth. Solar energy is 100% inexhaustible energy with no toxic or polluting emissions in to the air. Using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels is key to sustainable development.  Consumption of renewable energy such as solar energy is increasing in today’s time. For efficient energy requirement through solar we can use different concentrating collectors like parabolic trough system, power tower, parabolic dish, compound parabolic collector etc.

The nonuniform and high-gradient solar radiation flux on the absorber surface  will affect its operational reliability and service lifetime. Due to high temperature focused at a single point can damage the surface and reduce life of solar cells. Therefore, homogenization of the flux distribution is critical and important.

Project Implementation Method

Initially we discussed the scope of the project and found that there are so many industrial applications of it. After that we estimated the total cost of the project and whether its affordable for BS Students. When Our Supervisor assured of financial support then we give a go ahead to the project. As we had limited time so we set a timeline for the completion of project. We divided different work for different individuals. Due to examinations , holidays and other university events interuption it took us 5 months to complete the project. Currently we are performing experiment and found good results. 

Benefits of the Project

The efficiency of Solar Panel is around 12 to 16% while the rest of energy is wasted. While the optical efficiency of compound parabolic concnetrator is around 80 to 90 percentages. There are numerous benefits of using compound parabolic concentrators which are given below;

1- For Solar Water Heating

2- In Solar Cooking

3- Can be used in Solar Still Plant and Water Pasteurization

4- Usable in the field of Solar Air Conditiioning

5- In power generation---in photovoltaic cells

6- Provides hot water in quick time for the washing of rubber in industries.

7- Used in daylight system

8- Used in industrial applications where medium pressure steam is required.

9- Can be used for beam and diffused radiation

10- Works in cloudy weather which solar panels do not

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project is completed. We designed evrything by our own and made it in to final use. We obtained results and solution for the non-uniform flux distribution. During the making of project we faced few difficulties like we had to order solar flux meter and diodes from China. We are hopeful of publishing our paper in a research journal.

Project is ready for small industrial purpose.
