Acoustic emission (AE) is a passive NDE technique that makes use of the high-frequency acoustic energy emitted by an object that is undergoing stress, such as when corrosion products formed on a corroding rebar push out on the concrete surrounding it.

Project Objectives

The goals of acoustic emission examinations in industrial applications today, are detection, location and assessment of flaws in structures made of metal, concrete or composites. In these materials, fracture development in form of crack propagation is a primary source of acoustic emission.

Project Implementation Method

Acoustic emission testing works by mounting small sensors onto a component under test. The sensors convert the stress waves into electrical signals, which are relayed to an acquisition PC for processing. ... Acoustic emission can be thought of as tiny earthquakes that occur in the material.
