Advanced Building Fire Safety Damage Monitoring and Automation
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummarySmart building safety is not possible without integrating IoT and the construction industry. The restoration of fire-damaged structures is a subject in which most of the architects and structural design engineers have very little or no experience in Pakistan. Moreover, fire accidents are common in Pakistan and frequently observed in residential and commercial buildings. Nearly 720-fire incidents reported in the first three months of the last year. The increasing number of fire accidents in most of the metropolitan city is an alarming sign. During construction, few or no safety provisions are being considered against fire and current cities are congested. The world is now focusing on Smart building solution and IoT application in building fire safety. The aim of this project is to assess the building damages due to fire and generate an early warning to minimize property and live losses. The project involves real fire testing, modelling and developing a solution to generate an early warning and assessment system.

- To conduct standard ASTM E8 / E8M laboratory test of the building member after the localized fire to assess residual strength.
- To model multistory building using ETABS and identify the entire building response under fire.
- To automate an early warning system and damage assessment using IoT.

To obtain the desire results the following step will be methodology has been designed:
• GFR and steel strength using standard ASTM E8 / E8M in Laboratory after localized fire exposure.
• To conduct tensile tests on GFR & Steel embedded in concrete after fire exposure.
• To compare the strength of GFR with steel using different dia.
*Different dia. Comparison
10 mm GFR with 10mm Steel Reinforcement
10 mm GFR with 12mm Steel Reinforcement
10 mm GFR with 16mm Steel Reinforcement
10 mm GFR with 20mm Steel Reinforcement
• To design building the model in ETABS using different ratio and monitor the results and then interchanging the ratios and comparing the reaction of both designed proposals with the GFR & steel-reinforced structure.
• The thermal properties of steel and GFR will incorporate in ETABS and asses the same combination to check building performance and damage assessment.
• Python will be used automate the alarm and damage assessment of the structure. The designed process will sense the fire damage and notify in two stages (a) Initial notification about fire breakout and (b) notification about damage assessment in order to minimize property and live losses.
Benefits of the Project
- Currently, many cities in Pakistan are congested with almost no provision to safety. This project will be an initiative to move on the smart city starting from updating the safety of the existing infrastructure.
- Due to congested and improper town planning, in case of any fire accident, it is difficult for the fire brigade to reach on time. Secondly, due to narrow lanes in most of the areas, there are open electric wiring, tangled telephone and cable lines make it difficult to reach out on different stories of the building.
- The project aims is to minimize property and live losses of the inhabitant and firefighters during fire accidents also improve life quality.
- Moreover, it will support structural design engineers to assess the residual strength of the structural member after the fire accident.
- In future, this could lead to the future development of similar safety issues.
The project will deliver an advance yet a cheap alarming system that can generate an early alarm and damage assessment directly to the owner or stakeholder of the building during fire accident and identify residual structural strength left after fire exposure.
