A Smart Facility Control System for Buildings
Project Area of Specialization Shared EconomyProject SummaryThis project revolves around the concept of energy trading for Shared Facility Services (SFS) of a smart society. We present a hardware model where shared facility services such as street lights or convection centers of a smart society are powered using electricity from the resident prosumers (consumers and producers) using an auction process. These prosumers are interested to sell their energy in order to gain extra revenue. The auction scheme is based on combinatorial auctions in which bidders submit their bids in form of packages. We have use genetic algorithm as a class of evolutionary algorithms to run and calculate the winner determination process. By using MATLAB, a graphical user interface bridges the algorithm with hardware model that consists of 20 prosumers and 1 shared facility controller. The prototype includes microcontrollers, circuit breakers and relay modules for the communication and interfacing process. Furthermore, performance tests such as social welfare and average price at different times of day are also presented and evaluated.
Project Objectives- Implement the concept of energy trading in smart societies.
- Design and development of evolutionary algorithm.
- Provide prosumers to have profits for extra energy production.
- MATLAB is used as a simulation tool to run the algorithm.
- The algorithm performs auction process and calculates the winner determination problem.
- A Graphical User Interface is created and allows potential buyer and prosumers to bid their price and energy units.
- The winners for allocated energy have their energy units which are fed into ATmega2560 microcontrollers, that also operate the prosumers relay modules.
- ATmega328 microcontrollers serially communicates with ATmega2560 microcontrollers.
- ATmega328 does voltage sensing, current sensing and relay operation of shared facility services such as street lights or water pumps.
- Once the SFS are powered, the auction process ends.
- With the advent of smart grids, small smart societies are considerable as microgrids where open trades occur. A smart grid service permits to implement the idea of energy trading.
- This project provides the design which has advantage for the shared facility services such as street lights to use electrical energy of the residents of society who are willing to rent out in order to gain some revenue.
- By this way, prosumers will have surplus profits that will enhance economic efficiency.
- There will be no shortage of energy and the idea provides a feasible solution to move towards smart societies.
- Evolutionary algorithm is used because our winner determination problem is NP hard problem. The algorithm posses flexibility, adaptivity and is population based that produces optimal results.
- Graphical User Interface is the MATLAB User Interface (UI)created using GUIDE function does the interfacing of hardware model and software.
- The corresponding datasets of prosumers and shared facility controller are called in the Simulink through which the allocated energy units of the winners are transmitted to the microcontrollers.
- Inter-Integrated circuit(I2C) protocol is used for communication of multiple master controllers with multiple slave microcontrollers.
