Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject SummaryThe research presents a new method for position tracking of friendly target (person or vehicle) using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. The proposed system overcomes the weakness of jamming in GPS tracking and high maintenance cost in case of local beacon tracking. The system detects a friendly target using the spaceborne/airborne bistatic SAR with the help of an encoding reflector. An Encoding reflector is used to increase the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of friendly target and to distinguish it from other objects by reflecting the radio waves coming from spaceborne/airborne transmitter and directing them to the receiver on ground in temporally encoded form.
Project ObjectivesThe objective of the project is to present the results showing that in SAR image space, the cell with the friendly target can be distinguished from background cells by processing multiple images of the same target area ( images are distinguished because of temporally encoding reflector.).
Project Implementation Methodfollowing steps are taken for achieving the objective:
- The small vehicle without tires is mounted with antenna, transmitting circuitry and receiving circuitry.
- the vehicle then is placed on the conveyor belt for controlled velocity of the platform.
- the USRP is used for the receiving and processing of the received signal.
There are direct benefits and indirect benefits of the project. The direct benefits include:
- A local positioning system which is capable of complementing the weaknesses of present positioning systems.
- Able to show spaceborne SAR system using CubeSat for the first time, because of unique characteristics (and requirements) of the positioning system being proposed.
Indirect benefits include:
- The system is a good anti-stealth technology
- The proposed system can be further developed to work as altimeter (for example for measuring sea surface height)
The final deliverable will be a graph showing the concentration of energy in background cells in comparison with the energy in cell with the friendly target, when all three imagesĀ (depending on the setting of encoding reflector) of target area are processed.
